About us

What is pPOD?

pPOD is a group of researchers that work with young children and families to understand how early experiences influence behaviour and development. The research covers a broad span, from the development and testing of new and innovative interventions for families to biological research that seeks to best understand how different experiences can affect development.

pPOD was initially set up by Paul Ramchandani and Susannah Murphy.  It is now primarily based at Imperial College London, but we work closely with colleagues in Cambridge, Oxford, Exeter, Bath and at other Universities in London and The Netherlands.

What is it all about?

Recent scientific evidence has emphasised the important influence of the early environment on children’s development and the potential impact of this time for lifelong health and wellbeing. This includes the environment in the first few years of a child’s life, but also the environment when they are developing in their mother’s womb.

Early child development is wonderfully complex, and the complicated interplay of the early environment with a child’s genes, including the influence of the early environment on epigenetic changes, is an exciting and evolving challenge in the field.

pPOD seeks to further understanding these aspects of children’s development by undertaking a number of research studies, including clinical trials of new psychological interventions to improve young children’s mental health, and that of their parents.  Most of our work is conducted in the UK, but we also work with research groups across the world.  You can find details of the people in the team, the studies we do, and the papers we write and talks we do on this website.
